Colorado River Cleanup

13th Annual event offered the opportunity to perform a deep cleaning on Grand Valley rivers

That's a wrap! With  the support of more than a dozen organizations, 46 volunteers took to the water at 9am on Saturday, August 4th and floated, paddled, walked, and even dragged a fleet of watercraft down two stretches of the Gunnison and Colorado Rivers cleaning the rivers as they went. After more than six hours on the water, an impressive amount of trash was removed from our rivers including:

  • 15 cubic yards of trash
  • countless cans, plastic, and glass bottles
  • 19 tires including giant tractor tires
  • 1,000 pounds of metal
  • 2 shopping carts
  • 4 bicycles
  • 1 bassinet
  • 1 trap skeet launcher
  • 1 wading pool
  • 1 fuel tank
  • 6’ of 2" steel cable
  • 1 painted bronze eagle statue

The low waters required the volunteers to work extra hard to maneuver their fully loaded rafts, duckies, canoes and SUPs, but it also gave the cleaning crew access to some trash that wouldn’t be accessible otherwise. 2018 was a deep cleaning year.

Together we invested more than 300 hours of volunteer work on Saturday that directly benefits the communities of the Grand Valley. Our rivers are cleaner, helping protect our vital water, native fish, birds, and reptiles. The rivers are safer for recreation with the removal of half a ton of sharp metal. The banks are cleaner and more enjoyable when recreating or simply relaxing at the water’s edge. The lifeblood of the Grand Valley is flowing better today thanks to your support. I hope you will get out and enjoy it soon. Our rivers are beautiful gems to be appreciated.

We look forward to all the support again next year.

Thank you,
